  • Although commonly considered a bunching onion, Southport White Globe is actually a common onion (A. cepa) whose round, white bulbs are typically harvested young for use as a pearl onion or pickling onion.
  • Dating back to 1906, this popular New England heirloom earned its name from the Connecticut town from which it hails. It has maintained its popularity for over 100 years, sometimes trading under the names "White Rocca" or "Silver Ball".
  • Southport White Globe's sweet, white onions are delicious harvested early as a salad onion, later as a pearl onion, and can even be left to mature for winter storage. At maturity, the round, white globes rarely exceed 2-3 inches wide, but their pungency at this stage more than makes up for their diminutive size.
